Final Critique

Final Critique Requirements and Guidelines, Spring 2010

5/11 - 5/12 Final Critique (Rooms 209, 211, 305)
If you have a special room request, please reserve the room with me ASAP. An official schedule will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

Requirements (please read all):

Amount of Prints:
A minimum of 7 finished prints created this semester. These prints should reflect your highest printing standards.

Print Preparation:
Prints should be prepared before critique. One should not arrive at their critique with a freshly delivered roll from Elco or another service bureau.  There is no excuse for prints that are curled, have inconsistent color or printing flaws.  Prepare your prints ahead of time and expect that part of the process of making fine prints is discarding prints that are not perfect.  This takes time and is near impossible to achieve a few days before a scheduled critique.  Setting a personal deadline a week ahead of the final critique date is the only way to avoid last minute emergencies.

Scale:
All prints should be the same scale, paper, etc. unless you have discussed an alternative presentation with your instructor.

Evolution of Work:
If pertinent to your current series, an additional 3 - 5 prints from a previous semester can be presented to get feedback on the series as it has evolved.  This will be the last review of your work as a VCUarts student, make it what you want it to be!

Wall Presentation/Display:
Prints should not have any pins pushed through them or touching the paper. Nothing should be damaging the print.  Refinement and control of media is paramount to the reception of your work.  If there are scratches, dents, bends, or warping of the surface/image your presentation will suffer.

Installation:
Prints should be hung securely, level and spaced for optimal viewing. (do not hang them too close to each other)  Have each print ready for instillation with hanging armature tested and ready.

Lighting:
Prepare additional lighting beforehand and expect nothing short of perfection.  Do not wait the morning of critique to figure out your options.  Make sure the prints are not difficult to see. Avoid creating glares, low lighting, or having stands in the way of viewing the prints.

Responsibility
Under no circumstance, blame faults with your prints on an outside printer (Costco, Fabry, Elco). You are solely responsible for taking criticism of color, density, clarity, borders, mounting, etc.
Only mention your name in regards to the presentation of the work.  At this point, the work is your creation and vision.  Stand by what you have created and present with confidence.

Artist Statement:
Please provide a complete (proof read) artist statement to the instructor. The statement should be well conceived and truly reflect the nature of your work.

Oral Presentation:
When presenting your work clearly state your artist statement.  Guide your audience through the conceptual foundation / interests of your work. Reveal what you expect out of your own work and how you evaluate its success and failure. Stand with confidence and introduce the work as a clear representation of your individual artistic achievement.

Preparation:

Week Before
Prepare for your presentation the week before the official critique day. Have all of your necessary equipment checked/reserved before the day you present. Test out your setup and all electronics the week before. You will be in complete charge of your setup the day of your presentation (you will be evaluated on this and will not receive help). If you have a special room request, please reserve the room with me ASAP. If we have to wait longer than 5 minutes for your critique to begin, you will not present to the class.

Practice your presentation to the class.  You have presented your work for critique countless times over the last four years.  This presentation should reflect your refinement and presence as an educated, invested, mature artist.

Critique Day
Arrive 30 minutes early to the scheduled time of your presentation.  Do not be late.  If you will need assistance installing your work, make specific plans ahead of time.  You may not leave critique to help a fellow classmate install or take down.

Clean up

After presenting your work, it is your sole responsibility to return any critique room back to its original state (prior to your presentation). You have 24 hrs. to do so. In other words, if you install large nails in room 209, then you must fill the holes – if you use tape and damage a wall, you must repair and paint.  Also, be considerate of the time required by those presenting before and after you.
